Treatment of odour and VOC emissions produced by municipal wastewater treatment plants

Municipal wastewater plants often produce odours that are responsible for complaints to plants operators arising from odor nuisance for people living in the locality.

Compounds responsible for mal odours are mainly hydrogen sulphide and reduced organic compounds of sulfur (dimethyl sulphide, mercaptan, etc.).

Air Clean has significant experience in this field and utilizes both physical/chemical systems (chemical scrubbers, activated carbon) and biological systems (biofilters, biotrickling, bioscrubber).

The most interesting technology in this area are biotrickling filters because of their simplicity of operation, high efficiency and low full life cycle costs.

Biotrickling filters combine low costs of operation and maintenance (typical for biological systems) along with  treatment of higher concentrations of pollutants in comparison to traditional biofilters.

Air Clean is an exclusive distributor of MónaShell® biotrickling technology. This technology is based on the utilisation of naturally occurring recovered seashell for use as an attached growth biotrickling media. This  offers enhanced performance and reduced water consumption due to the calcium carbonate in the shell material that neutralizes acids and maintains the pH in the optimum range for biological treatment. The biological oxidation of in-organic odorous compounds such as H2S and mercaptan produces acid that can lower pH and impact negatively on system performance.

Realization of totally closed systems with final dispersion through an exhaust stack is one more advantages of this process.
