The system mode of operation is the transfer of dust particles from air to water.

To maintain treatment it is necessary to purge contaminated water from the process and replace with clean water.

Technologies utilized differ depending on the requirement for contact between gas and liquid, or for stripping of compounds.

In the floating bed scrubbers, the mass transfer packing media are hollow spheres continuously fluidized by the air passing through the scrubber.

Dust particles are removed from the airstream and attach to the wet surface of the packing, the packing in turn is self-cleaning by continuously collisions with other spheres which keeps the solid material in the liquid phase where it is returned to the sump.

This prevents caking and eventual blocking of the packing which can occur with dust particles in stationary random packed media. Floating bed scrubbers are very often used in air pre-treatment in composting plants, in which the main problem for mass transfer scrubber packing is biofouling due to high levels of carbon and nutrients.

It is also possible to add to the washing solution an acid reagent for the removal of ammonia.

The air to be dedusted is accelerated in such a way as to guarantee greater contact between the air to be dedusted and the water used to capture the polluting particles.

The advantage of this system is the risk of blockage with dusty airstreams is eliminated, however, the energy required for operation of this process is greater than that required for lower efficiency gas washing systems or dry systems, such as bag filters.

Since this is a high-energy system it is also often suitable to the abstraction of the very small grain powders.

The venturi scrubber is normally used as a dust collector (pretreatment stage), upstream of a randomly packed static scrubber for chemical reduction (chemical oxidation) of pollutants.

The venturi scrubbers or cyclones are often used in industrial field when you have particularly difficult dust or powders to be treated: for example, gypsum or cement dust.

Particularly critical is the dust separation system once the dust or solid material is passed into the liquid phase. For industrial applications dust or solid materials can be removed from the water by use of automatic separation techniques based on physical barriers such as sieve or membrane filters or gravimetric separators.
